Stephen M. Asbel began his law career at our firm in 1990 and became a partner in 1997. His practice areas include Wills, Trusts, Estate Planning and Estate Administration, LGBT+ Law, Planning Second-Parent and Intra-Family Adoptions, and Gestational Carrier and Assisted Reproduction Technology Agreements.

Mr. Asbel is passionate about helping individuals and families plan for future needs for themselves, their children and extended family. Addressing needs for estate taxation, choosing fiduciaries to manage funds until children or other beneficiaries come of age, planning ahead for making medical decisions, addressing special needs of family members - all personal decisions that go into planning your estate for your family.

He is experienced in helping families who have lost a loved one, who did not have an estate plan or who had an estate plan but it was out-of-date, navigate the probate system.

Years before same-sex marriage recognition became a reality in the United States, Mr. Asbel was already serving the planning needs of the LGBT+ community and continues that service now that same-sex marriage is recognized in Pennsylvania.

Raised in Haverford Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Mr. Asbel attended Haverford High School and was captain of the “Scott’s Hi-Q Team” (a multi-school academic quiz competition) and a member of the marching and concert bands. He graduated in 1982.

At the University of Pennsylvania, he majored in International Relations, played in the band and competed in The College Bowl (a multi college, academic, quiz competition). He graduated with a B.A. degree in 1986 cum laude and as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar.

Mr. Asbel earned his Juris Doctor Degree at Villanova University School of Law in 1989. At Villanova, he was a member of the Jewish Law Students’ Association and the Corporate Law Society as well as a participant in The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, where he prepared income tax returns for people with low-income.

In 1990 he married his wife, Lenore; and they have 2 beautiful daughters. He has served his community as a leader at the former Suburban Jewish Community Center – B’nai Aaron in Havertown, Pennsylvania on its executive committee for 13 years and as its president for 3 years. Mr. Asbel is currently a member of the Ritual Committee at Temple Adath Israel of the Main Line where he volunteers as a lay-prayer leader and teacher.
