Stephen M. Asbel is a partner in our firm.  He focuses on the areas of wills, trusts, estate planning and estate administration. He is passionate helping individuals and families to plan for future needs for themselves and their children.  Planning includes addressing needs regarding estate taxation, choosing fiduciaries to manage funds until children or other beneficiaries come of age, planning ahead for making medical decisions, addressing special needs of family members and other important decisions.  Years before same-sex marriage recognition began to take hold in the United States, Mr. Asbel was already serving the planning needs of the LGBT community and continues to do so now that same-sex marriage is recognized in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Asbel works in several aspects of family law – family creation areas such as second parent adoption; contracts related to gestational surrogacy and assisted reproductive technology; and pre-nuptial and post-nuptial contracts.  Mr. Asbel represents clients in divorce matters both in a traditional advocacy role and in working with couples seeking a mediated or cooperative divorce.

Raised in Haverford Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania,  Mr. Asbel graduated from Haverford High School in 1982 where he was captain of the school’s team in what was then known as “Scott’s Hi-Q” academic quiz competition and was a member of the marching and concert bands.  Mr. Asbel attended the University of Pennsylvania where he was a Benjamin Franklin Scholar, majored in International Relations and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree Cum Laude in 1986.  While at Penn, Mr. Asbel was a member of the Penn Band and competed in College Bowl.  Mr. Asbel then attended Villanova University School of Law and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1989.  While at Villanova, Mr. Asbel was a member of the Jewish Law Students Association and the Corporate Law Society.  Mr. Asbel did work preparing income tax returns for low-income individuals in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

In 1990, Mr. Asbel married his wife, Lenore. They have two daughters.  In the community, Mr. Asbel was a leader at the former Suburban Jewish Community Center-Bnai Aaron in Havertown, PA serving on its executive committee for 13 years including President from 2007 to 2010. Mr. Asbel is now a member of the Ritual Committee at Temple Adath Israel of the Main Line. From 1993 until 2003, Mr. Asbel was a local party committeeman.  Mr. Asbel’s hobbies include gardening and learning multiple regional modes of chanting Biblical Hebrew texts. He also loves dogs – currently, Maggie, the family Cairn Terrier who is distantly related to Terry, the cairn who played Toto in the Wizard of Oz; the family had a couple of rescued dogs in the past as well.
