Paternity Lawyers Serving Men and Women in Greater Philadelphia
At Berman & Asbel, LLP, our attorneys have an extensive background representing clients with complex family law concerns. We work to establish paternity and enforce a father's right to be in the child's life. Once paternity is established, a child custody order can be created to ensure the father is able to spend time with his child.
In addition, we have successfully helped mothers establish paternity so they can obtain child support for day care, educational and medical costs.
How Do Paternity Tests Work?
Paternity tests are straightforward and painless, as is establishing paternity through legal acknowledgement:
- The test is used to evaluate your DNA by scraping a few skin cells from a supposed father's cheek and the cheek of the child. The samples are compared and it is determined that you are either the father of the child or not.
- To officially acknowledge paternity, the father must sign the Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form, which will be placed on the child's birth certificate. Once the man signs this, he only has 60 days to rescind if he has any doubts about being the father.
- After 60 days have passed, you will be locked in as the father and will be expected to pay child support, even if you are not the real father.
