NFL broadcaster's death good time to discuss ancillary probate

Pat Summerall may be best remembered by younger sports fans as the voice that broadcasted football games involving teams like the Philadelphia Eagles opposite John Madden in the NFL booth across the nation, but his career started well before that. He was born in Florida where he played a wide variety of sports but eventually went to Arkansas as football player.

From there he was drafted to the Detroit Lions, played with the Chicago Cardinals before they found their way to Arizona and finally settled with the New York Giants. It was after he retired that he happened upon his broadcasting career.

Summerall was the one who said "It's right down the pipe. Adam Vinatieri. No time on the clock. And the Patriots have won Super Bowl XXXVI. Unbelievable," when the Patriots defeated the Rams by a single field goal at the very end of the game. Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones called Summerall "royalty in the broadcast booth."

This week he died at the age of 82 when he suffered cardiac arrest at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center nearby where he finally settled his long career.

Whether you followed his career, listened to his voice or even watched football doesn't matter. His death is a good time to talk about something called ancillary probate administration. Those whose lives take them across the country often own property in more than one state, so what happens when their estate is probated in one? What happens to the real property located in another state? Ancillary probate administration takes care of this type of situation.
